DANIEL FERREIRA     DIGITAL CREATIVE
Autoria Procedimental fichamento

Murray identified four essential properties of the computer as a representational medium: that computers are procedural, participatory, encyclopedic and spatial. (…)  While all of these properties play some role in various computational media, procedurality is the essential, defining property of computational media, without which the other properties could not exist. (Procedural Authorship: A Case-Study of the Interactive Drama Façade, Mateas e Stern, 2005)

Expressive AI takes as its starting point that the essence of the computer as a representational medium is not the ability to intervene in the production of three dimensional forms or visual imagery, nor the ability to interact with a participant/observer, nor the ability to control electro-mechanical systems, nor the ability to mediate signals sent from distant locations, but rather computation, that is, processes of mechanical manipulation to which observers can ascribe meaning.  (Semiotic Considerations in an Artificial Intelligence-Based Art Practice, Mateas, 2003 – grifos meus)

The goal here is not simply to play a dominance game between the various representational properties of computers, but to avoid serious confusions and misunderstandings that can arise in new media theory and practice from misunderstanding the central importance of procedurality. (Mateas e Stern, 2005 -grifos meus)

Relacionando-a à questão da “literacia procedural“:

New media practitioners without procedural literacy are confined to producing those interactive systems that happen to be possible to produce within existing authoring tools. (…)  This approach fundamentally limits the size and complexity of new media artifacts. (Mateas e Stern, 2005)

E conclui:

[P]rocedural authorship is required to take full advantage of the representational power of the computer as an expressive medium. (Mateas e Stern, 2005)
